Lumberjacks take 2nd in Santa Cruz

The Lumberjacks took 2nd place in the 2011 Santa Cruz Classic. Last year, the Jacks beat the Santa Cruz Mets in the semi-finals and eventually won the tournament - yet this year the Mets beat us 6-3 in the championship game to take the crown.
Game one was exciting as the Jacks scored 2 in the bottom of 9th to give the Lumberjacks the 3-2 win over the Lumber Co. Danny Rico had a key RBI single to tie the game 1-1 in the 8th, and Lex Robins had an RBI single in the 9th to tie the game 2-2. With the bases loaded later on in the 9th with 2 outs, the Jacks caught a break when the umpire called catcher's interference on the final pitch of the game, forcing in the winning run from third base. Joey Stoval pitched well to pick up the win.
Game two was just as tense. The Lumberjacks and Mets were tied 0-0 in the 7th innning when the Mets broke through and eventually won 4-1. Kyle Huntzenbuhler pitched extremely well although he picked up the tough loss. Max Childress hit a 2-out RBI double to put the Jacks on the board.
The Lumberjacks won game three 6-1 over the San Jose Padres as Wes Bentley took a no-hitter into the 7th inning.
Orlando Kelly pitched extremely well helping the Jacks win game four 3-2 over the Diablos. Brad Shannon hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to seal the victory.
The championship game went down to the wire. In the bottom of the 9th, Tom Macari hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right to cut to deficit down to 6-3. With 2 outs, Mike Taylor drew a walk, putting the tying-run on first base. Orlando Kelly then drilled a deep fly to center, but the fielder hauled it in at the warning track and the Mets were crowned as champs.
Overall, the tournament was exciting and the Lumberjacks did well, finishing in 2nd place. Overall record is now 13-4.
